Verse Of The Day : I am dark but lovely, oh maidens of Jerusalem, dark like the tents of Qedar, lovely like the tent curtains of Salmah. Do not stare at me because I am dark, for the sun has burn my skin. – Songs of Solomon 1: 5, 6.
LISTEN : No two persons can be the same in everything. Though we’re created in the image of God but made with distinct personalities, shapes, sizes, colours, perspectives, appearances, likes and dislikes, etc. These distinct features we’re made with are what makes us unique and distinguished from others. Most often we’re rather quick to criticise other people’s perspectives, personalities, shapes, sizes, appearances, colours, likes and dislikes, etc, than appreciate or help them where we can.
The selfish nature of mankind always makes us believe that we’re the best of all sizes, colours, appearances, perspectives, personalities, shapes, etc. When others doesn’t wear the same colour as ours we see them as inferiors or less human. When others doesn’t share in our views, like what we like and dislike what we dislike, have the same shape or size like ours; have the same personality as ours, we’re moved to criticise, gossip, taunt and despise them.
In our verse of the day ( Son.1:5,6), One of Solomon’s wives whom he loved so much affirmed her unique nature in spite of the change in her colour occasioned by the pressures of life. She said, ” I am dark but lovely, oh maidens of Jerusalem, dark like the tents of Qedar, lovely like the tent curtains of Salmah. Do not stare at me because I am dark, for the sun has burn my skin”.
Beloved, don’t be intimidated by other people’s perspectives or opinions about you, instead like this woman in our text of the day, remember that you’re very unique. She said, ” I am dark but lovely”. Friend, it is not your colour that defines you but what you think about yourself. You may not measure up to the standard of others but you’re still unique. Learn to cherish your unique nature and don’t be frustrated by what others thinks about you. To everyone of us, let’s be ourselves and allowed others to be themselves.
Having read today’s devotional message, what are you expected to do?
1. Always remember that everyone cannot be you, therefore allow others to be themselves.
2. Help others to overcome their “weaknesses” and not criticise them destructively.
3. In being yourself, live to the glory of God.
4. Don’t run your life on people’s opinions about you, run it on God’s opinion – you’re unique.
Always remember that people’s opinions will sometimes differ from yours, therefore, don’t allowed them to thwart your God-given purpose.
Daily Reflection : Don’t give up on yourself just because you’re regularly criticised, rather see criticism as an opportunity to excel and succeed.
Almighty God, I thank you for making me the way I am, I accept my features, colour, size, shape and personality. Help me to improve on them where necessary, in Jesus ‘ name, amen.
Prophetic Word : Today, I prophesy upon your life, every spirit of self – rejection, low self – esteem, self – abandonment, self- abuse, self- abasement is cast out of your life permanently, in Jesus ‘ name.
