Verse of the Day: You desire and you do not have; you murder and envy and you cannot obtain; you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask;you ask and do not receive because you ask wrongly, so you can spend it on your passions.- James 4: 2- 3 (NET)

LISTEN: Some important questions you must ask yourself before you pray to receive are: what am I praying for? What are my motives for this prayer? Do I seek the glory of God and the welfare of others, or I’m only concern about my welfare? Your sincere answers to the above questions will help you pattern your prayers in line with the will of God.

Outside the hinderances occasioned by sin to our prayers, praying wrongly could be another hindrance to getting answers to prayers.  In our verse of the day, Apostle James was addressing the people of God and he said, “You lust and have not, you kill and desire to have and cannot obtain; … you ask and receive not, because you ask wrongly, that you may consume it upon your lust” (vv.2-3).  What it means is that, for us to receive answers to our prayers, we must pray in line with the will of God (1 John 5:14). Prayer made contrary to the will of God certainly cannot receive answer from Him.

Beloved, what does it mean to pray wrongly? It is to pray only to satisfy your interest and selfish desires at the expense of God and mankind.  When you’re self-centered and selfish in your request to God, it makes it difficult and practically impossible to receive from Him.  When all you pray about is to get money or wealth for luxury, pride and self- aggrandizement rather than glorify God with it and meet human needs, God will always see such prayer as an abomination in His sight. Friend, pray aright today and you will certainly receive from Him.

Having read today’s devotional message, what are you expected to do?
1. Always pray in line with the will of God.
2. Make your prayers to include serving God and meeting other people’s needs.
3. Avoid greed and selfishness when you pray.
4. Never ask for the wrong reason.

Daily Task
When you pray ask yourself, what does God and mankind stand to benefit if my prayer is granted?  If the answer is ‘nothing’, just know that you’re praying for the wrong reason.

Daily Reflection : We embarrass and insult God with our prayers when we pray for the wrong reason.

God of grace, you alone are worthy of worship. Grant me the grace to pray in line with your will in Jesus’ name, amen.

Prophetic Word : I prophesy over your life, grace to pray in line with the will of God. May God give you deeper understanding of his will; may your prayer not be rejected in Jesus ‘ name.
