Verse Of The Day: So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.- Psalms 90 : 12

LISTEN: Praise God! We all finally made it to 2017. All over the world today, the first of January 2017, there is celebrations in the air. The whites and the blacks, the rich and the poor, young and old, The wise and foolish; Christians, pagans and people from various religions of the world alike are celebrating their survival and arrival into the new year.

All over the place people are celebrating using the phrase – ” Happy new year” to relatives, friends and colleagues. Greetings and compliments are exchanged with one another both to those near and far. Sadly, many folks celebrate without thinking. We humans tend to celebrate ‘a plus’ to our years on earth, but failed to mourn ‘a minus’ from our year too. Without wisdom, it is ridiculous and difficult to understand what I am talking about.

When I celebrate a new year, what it means is that a year has been added to the number of years I have stayed on the earth; and a year has equally been minus from my life span. For instance, if I was fifty years old in 2016, I will be fifty one years old in 2017. Indirectly, all things being equal I should be more closer to old age (the grave) than when I was fifty. As the circle of the new year celebration continues year after year, certainly I will come to my last new year celebration and my life will expire on earth. This is applicable to everyone, whether you pretend to know nothing about it.

Unfortunately, many people do not see it from this angle. They only celebrate without thorough reflection. They believe that they will always be there for a long time. We need wisdom. Only divine wisdom can guide us in making the necessary decisions regarding our earthy life and pursuing the will of God. (See Psalms 39 : 4 ; John 9: 4 ; Ephesians 5 : 16 , 17). The Psalmist in our verse of the day said, ” So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” (Psalms 90 : 12).

The NEW ENGLISH TRANSLATION (NET) puts it this way, ” So teach us to consider our mortality, so that we might live wisely.” Beloved, our days on the earth are numbered, so let us learn to live wisely. We will not be here forever. Each new day draws us closer to the grave. Therefore, in our celebrations let us also consider our end. Remember, Jesus Christ loves you.
God bless you. I wish you a prosperous new year.
