Author: Bishop Julius Okarike,
Verse Of The Day: For the commandments are like a lamp, instruction is like a light, and rebukes of discipline are like the road leading to life. Proverbs 6 : 23
LISTEN: The commandment of God is the same as His word. His words are His will and instructions to man. His word carries both light and life. It blesses us with insights, direction and revelations into the purpose of God for man. His word brings correction and saves from harm. The bible says, ” For the commandments are like a lamp, instruction is like a light, and rebukes of discipline are like the road leading to life.” (Proverbs 6 : 23).
Beloved, what does that mean? It means that the law of God is a lamp or candle to see to perform the right duty and to walk in the right path. It enlightens the eyes and directs the feet, and makes working more pleasant, and walking more comfortable. Without the commandments of the Lord, a man knows not rightly what to do or where he should walk, or where he is currently walking. The bible says, ” Your word is a lamp to walk by, and a light to illumine my path.” (Ps 119:105).
Without direction and insights from God’s word, man will live and die in the darkness of sin and sorrow. Beloved, God’s law is light; it makes things clear and manifest what is right and what is wrong; it enlightens the eyes of the understanding, whereby people come to see both their sin and their duty; and it directs them to avoid the one and do the other. Oh! How beautiful and advantageous is the law of God. (Ps 19:8).
Friend, following the ways of God will lead to life. When God reproof anyone, He meant to save such person from destruction and to give life. The reproofs of the LORD instruct what should be avoided and what should be performed, when attended to, put us in the way of an honourable and useful life; and are the means of preserving us from a scandalous and useless life. May we acknowledge God’s word as carrier of light and life, in Jesus’ name, amen.
