Verse Of The Day: My eyes stay open through the night watches, that I might meditate on your word. Psalms 119 : 148

LISTEN: Sleep is a natural thing and it happens naturally under normal circumstance. Most times, we struggle to sleep due to medical conditions, or some unresolved issues troubling our hearts; other times we sleep and perhaps over sleep when our intention was to stay awake.

Beloved, have you ever experienced a situation where you slept and possibly overslept when you desperately needed to stay awake for a purpose? Or unable to sleep through the night when you should sleep and have a good night rest? Can you still remember what kept you awake at such times? Perhaps you were worried over financial issues, your stubborn child, protracted illness, your state of bankruptcy, barrenness in your marriage, your joblessness, business failure, death, etc.

No doubt, all these things and many others can rob people of their sleep all night. Conversely, in our verse of the day we read about David whose reason for being awake all night was totally different from what keeps others awake. He said, My eyes stay open through the night watches, that I might meditate on your word. (Psalms 119 : 148).

David’s purpose of staying awake at night was not to attend to his domestic problems, worry over life’s circumstances, plot the downfall of his enemies, worry over wealth and prosperity of others, etc. but to meditate in the word of God. To meditate is to spend time in quiet thought for religious purposes. It is to engage in contemplation or reflection. It is to engage the mind for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness. That was what David expended his time to do.

Beloved, what keeps you awake at night? Personal issues, right? What about God-directed thoughts? How much time do you spend on the word of God? Do you know that until you spend time on the word of God you cannot maintain an intimate relationship with Him. Rather than spend your time on things without eternal value, spend it to meditate in the word of God, the word of life.
