Verse Of The Day: Let not your heart be troubled: you believe in God, believe also in me. John 14 : 1
LISTEN: As Jesus Christ was preparing for his death and departure from the earth after he was done with his earthly ministry; he gathered together his disciples to encourage and urge them to be strong in their faith in him. Obviously, it was a tough and heartbreaking moment for them (disciples) because, that appeared to be the last time they will ever see him. As a result, Jesus having seen their sorrows and heartbreak, assured them that the future would be bright and blissful. Because of the pain and discouragement his absence would cause them, he (Jesus) told them what to do. Jesus said to them, ” Let not your heart be troubled: you believe in God, believe also in me.”(John 14 : 1). He comforted his disciples with the hope of heaven (John 14 : 1 – 4); told them he is the way, the truth, and the life, and one with the Father (John 14 : 5); besides, he requires their obedience as he promised to send the comforter (John 14 : 15 , 16). Above all, he leaves his peace with them (us).(John 14 : 27).
When he said, “let not your heart be troubled”, what does that mean? It means that they should not allowed grief, or fear to disturb their minds. Hence, he recommended a remedy for these two afflicting passions (grief and fear). He said, “… Believe in God, believe also in me.” Beloved, the only remedy to the torture of grief and fear is faith. The phrase, believe in God, believe also in me, can be summarily put, ‘have faith in God.’ Beloved, the only cure for a troubled heart is faith in God. When faith occupies your heart your troubled heart will receive calmness, but when fear and grief dwells in your heart life will be a nightmare. Therefore, knowing the danger of faithlessness to peace of mind and life in general, Jesus Christ warned his disciples against it and urged them to be strong, believing and courageous. The same message goes to you today. Be strong, let not your heart be troubled. Whatever you are going through today, learn to trust in God, and your grief and fear will be arrested.
