A RULER OF THE PEOPLE

Author: Bishop Julius Okarike

Verse Of The Day: As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor people. Proverbs 28 : 15

LISTEN: Rulership should reflect leadership. Until a ruler becomes a leader, he or she will serve as a tyrant to the people. (Exodus 1 : 14 – 16). A tyrant is a ruler who has complete power over a country and who is cruel and unfair: someone who uses power in a cruel and unfair way. Sadly, the class of people mostly affected by this kind of rule are the poor, the helpless, the defenseless, and the likes. But people like this should have been the ruler’s responsibility to protect. The Bible says, ” When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked bears rule, the people mourn.” (Proverbs 29 : 2). My dear, in any level of rulership or leadership you find yourself, if your people are mourning or in pain for your actions, you are not doing well. If oppression, cruelty, violence, victimisation, marginalisation, human rights violation and criminality are on the rise, and also tolerated, then you are a wicked ruler. (Matthew 2 : 16). Power ought to be used to bring relief, joy and prosperity to the people and not the other way round. When your power is used against the people you lead instead of serving them with it, you have failed as a leader and will be judged by God, the supreme ruler. Beloved, are you a just or an unjust ruler? Are you roaring like a lion and charging like a bear against the poor of your people? Are you using your power against humanity instead of serving with it? Please change! Let your reign bring blessings and prosperity and not pain and heartbreak to the people. Henceforth, turn to God for mercy as you work hard to serve your people. Be wise!
