BE A HEARER AND DOER OF THE WORD

Verse Of The Day: But be you doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. James 1:22

LISTEN: Why we hear or learn is to benefit ourselves and others. (Proverbs 9 : 9). Then, what we hear should be able to affect our lives. What we hear is of no importance until it is applied. It is of no importance until it has affected our lives positively. The beauty of positive hearing is in doing what was heard. The world today is full of many hearers but few doers. People go to church and regularly hear the word of God without any sign of positive change. (2 Timothy 3 : 7). They hear but failed to do what they heard. God wants us to be both hearers and doers of His word. (James 1 : 23 – 25). Beloved, what enters your ears should be able to pass through your heart and affect your life. Do not be just a hearer of God’s word, instead, be a doer too. A doer of God’s word knows what to do with the word of God. He knows where to spend his or her time meaningfully. He or she knows what to do to please God and therefore go ahead to do it. His love is in obeying and honouring God. He or she is not a forgetful hearer but a lover of the ways of God.

But not so with a mere hearer of the word. A hearer who is not a doer of God’s word is just a listener, or a worshipper of God who does not worship Him in spirit and in truth. One who has accepted Jesus Christ as saviour, but rejects him as Lord. One who goes to church not to be spiritually nurtured, but to be emotionally entertained. One who is not interested in obeying God, but obeying the devil and satisfying self. One who is a forgetful hearer, a backslidder, a carnally-minded person who undermines spiritual things. Beloved, are you a hearer and a doer of the word, or just a hearer only? Hearing His word alone cannot save you. You must both hear and do it. The Bible clearly says, that mere hearers are deceiving themselves. Our verse of the day says, ” But be you doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” (James 1:22) Beloved, let us stop this self-deception of hearing and refusing to live in line with God’s word; instead, let us be eager both to hear and to do the word of God.

4. Determine to worship God in spirit and in truth no matter what.
